Review: Carrie

Carrie

Carrie is about a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother, who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

The movie was directed by Kimberly Peirce and stars, Chloƫ Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Gabriella Wilde, Ansel Elgort. The protagonist Carrie, is played by Chloƫ Grace Moretz who is well-known for her role as 'Hitgirl', in the teen, superhero comedy, 'Kick-Ass' and 'Kick-Ass 2'.

I chose this movie to review as a teen movie simply because of the themes portrayed within it, for example, even though it is a horror/thriller, there are common stereotypical high school themes for example, romance, rebellion, bullying, conflicts, alienation, etc.

The movie has a typical high school plot where the outcast girl, Carrie, is bullied and seen as a weirdo....however the catch is that she inherits telekinetic powers from her grandmother. This does not drive the movie away from a typical teen film because the good looking jock, Tommy, played by Ansel Elgort, rescues Carrie by asking her out for their senior prom. Tommy is a typical jock, he is the captain of the football team, everyone seems to know him as he walks down the corridor and all the girls want to be with him. Carrie also has a stereotyped role where she is bullied by other girls and everyone avoids her becuase they think she isn't normal. Some other characters are the mean girls who see themselves as better than everyone else and particularly Chris, who quits P.E and humilates Carrie by uploading an embarrasing video of her onto YouTube.

There is alot of conflict between Carrie and her mother, because Carrie is a girl being bought up in the 21st century whereas her mother is very old fashioned and superstitious. This is effective in bringing teens to watch this movie because many teenagers and young adults can relate to having arguements with their parents about staying out late, going parties, etc. Even though this mother is psychotic there is still evidence she fears for her daughter's safety as she warns her not to go the prom because her fellow students will laugh and mock her.

This film is mainly set in a high school because Carrie is a teenager and she worries more about looking good for her prom than her mother who she locked in a cupboard. This shows how desperate she is to fit in with the others and make herself stand out in a good way. Furthermore, this movie is a remake of the original Carrie released in 1976, directed by Brian De Palma and based on the novel by Stephen King.

For me, this movie is really exciting and fun to watch, and i think it will definately meet its target audience of teenagers and young adults, because of the high school daram but also the strong dose of horror. Also adults and older generations will be attracted because the novel Carrie was released many years ago along with the previous movie.
