Evaluation Question 7

What were common mistakes?
  • Editing and merging sound effectively to avoid tackiness.
  • Avoid dodgy lighting, unless it was on purpose for the shot.
  • To avoid jumpy shots and aim for match cuts rather than jump cuts because they look better.
  • Remember what was worn and the setting of the previous scene so that it works with the next.
  • Use a more versatile amount of shots to make it look of better quality. i.e - low angle shots, high angle shots, close ups, mid shots, panning etc.
How did we make improvements?
  • We had a camera tutorial on how to use the camera and its tools more effectively and successfully.
  • We used more equipment, but the correct equipment for the right angle shots.
  • We had used Final Cut Pro before from when we made swedes. So we knew how to use it now and had discovered new tools.
  • We had previously all worked together on our swede before doing coursework together, therefore we had now established each others strengths and weaknesses.
  • We had feedback from our 'Breakfast Club' remake and our rough cut of our opening sequence. So we took notes on what our faults were and focused strongly on them.
What tools on Final Cut Pro and others did we use to improve?

Overall

  • I have learnt that it takes a lot of research to ensure a good quality final product.
  • Also, I have learnt to look back on the past faults to see what the biggest errors to improve on were.
  • In addition, I have learnt that by using different types of technologies to make my work look more presentable and a effective portrayal of what I want to express.
  • We've progressed as a group and helped each others strengths and helped with each others more difficult aspects of the coursework.

BLOG

WE'VE FINISHED!!!!

Editing Days 1, 2 & 3

Types of Media - Kris

Types of Media used in our blog

Deadline

Deadline Post

Finished!

Types of Media - Shannon

Something our group has done really well is use different types of media.
Throughout the process of filming and editing we included updates by using various types of media.
Some have proven to be more popular and efficient.
This is so that work remains interesting and the blog doesn't look like continual essays.

Prezi:
I think 'Prezi' was a favorite.  We used it to create a good, organised presentation for our pitch and I used it for our pitch feedback.
Prezi allows our work to be organised and presentable which is better.
This is because loads of words on a blank page with no images looks boring.
Prezi also helps shrink down long text, making it easier for viewers to read.

SoundCloud & Creative Commons:
We were introduced to Creative Commons which led us to Sound Cloud. This was a legal way for us find a soundtrack for our film opening sequence without using copyright. Kris & I used it to find the soundtrack appropriate for our film.

Slid.es:
Slid.es was used when creating simple updates to our blog or assessing what was done during the lesson.
It is a quick easy process, that is why our group used Kris & I used it when writing about our rough cut feedback, and also when writing about the process of filming the Breakfast Club.

Gifs from movies we were inspired by or even fitted the task:

Gifs made our blog look better in the sense that it looked lifeless and dull without them. We figured out/learnt to make our own gifs and find ones through google images.

Our Film Opening Explanation

The Demon Inside

As a group we were very determined to have a serious film opening which explored supernatural activity.

Looking at our film opening, it wasn't funny at all and that's what we were going for although observing a lot of other groups' rough cuts and final footage we thought that ours was very different and individual.

Our problem was definitely over-thinking our film opening, in the beginning we planned to make a film that included a lot of fake blood and fighting, exorcisms and anything that we can possibly fit in the 2 minutes.

But then we realised, film openings are not supposed to be action packed. Realistically speaking, if we look at a lot of horror movies the first 2 minutes are usually the establishment of the characters, and this is exactly what we did.

We didn't want to have fights and bullying and a lot of stabbing or anything a lot of movies have these days because, that's the whole plot and it's supposed to happen all throughout the length of the movie not in the first 2 minutes.

So what we did, was we filmed two regular girls waking up and going to college. However, one was very girly and we can clearly see that she is the new girl because, we have a lot of very exciting and up beat music to represent her character. We sped up Olivia's movements (character name) to show her bubbly personality.
Switching to Blair (character name) we can see that she is quite dodgy in the film opening because she wears all black and wakes up and puts on her clothes and leaves the house, very non hygienic and rude.

Having Blair be in slow motion shows clear understanding that she is the bad guy. Just like any two girls we show their journey to college and that is all. We didn't have any action packed sequence in the first 2 minutes because, that wasn't necessary. If we were asked to film a whole movie then that could have possibly happened but looking at our demon possessed movie we felt like that wasn't necessary and it was just a waste of time.

Editing Day 3

Before my lesson started today I went in at lunch time to carry on editing our film oepning as we only have two more days till the deadline. I started off with improving the video with the feedback from Rebecca, I added more transitions, cut out more bits from the film and also began placing some of the titles. As I added the music, Kris and Shannon found the previous lesson, I realised that the soundtrack being used for Kris's scene was only 40 seconds long and this was a huge problem as her scene was about 1 minute and 20 seconds long. As workshop finished and lesson started the girls came in and I told them the problem and they began looking for another soundtrack. Next, I realised near the end of our film we didn't have a scene of Kris coming into college and I told the girls and who went out to film this short clip. I carried on making minor adjustments such as making match cuts seem more subtle and also adding transitions to the music we already had. I asked Marisa for quick feedback and she said it was good overall but we needed overlapping foley sound. I found a few sound effects and added them to our video drive. When the girls came back with the new footage I imported it into final cut pro and saved it.

Now all that's left to do is add all the titles, ident, music for one remaining scene and Kris's 10 second scene at the end! Editing is going really well as we have two days left and a little bit amount of stuff to do.

Social Networks

Social Networks

As a group we felt the need to create update accounts with everything that we're doing.
Twitter will allow us to tweet our location and letting our teachers know what we're up to and it's also a great way to socialise with other people.

Facebook is a lot more personal, we will share our film opening and write about all of the latest news that are happening and what we do during lesson time.

Instagram we will use for posting pictures of our work process and how we edit. We will make fun little videos and document our working progress.

Editing Day 2

Rough Cut Feedback

Today we uploaded our rough cut and got feedback from our teacher. As we were was editing, Rebecca gave us feedback, she suggested we should cut a lot of unnecessary bits out as our film opening was way to long. She told us to cut some bits from Shannon's waking up scene and the walking scenes of both characters. Furthermore, she suggested using cross fades rather than dissolves between some scenes. Also, she talked to us about where we will place our titles and we came up with a few ideas, such as placing them over the walking scenes as the character only occupied one part of the screen.

Production & Distribution Ident.

Production & Distribution Ident.

  • In our pitch, we stated that we would be choosing 'Film4' as our Production and Distribution.

  • This is because Film4 have their own channel in which they show programmes and films that they have produced or been involved in.

  • In addition, they tend to work on low budget British films which is what we have created. Therefore Film4 was our favourite option.

  • Film4 has created many different idents over the years, but we chose one of their originals which they have used for 'Submarine', 'Slumdog Millionairre' & many more of their films.

  • Film4 have created idents for car chase films, old western films and even underwater based films. None of them would've worked with our film opening as our genre is completley different.

Editing Day 1

On Monday, I began editing our film opening on 'Final Cut Pro'. Having used this programme many times, I was familiar with the tools and I was efficient in editing. We already had our files on the video drive because after every filming session we put our footage into either "Actual Footage' or 'Bloopers' onto the video drive. This gave me an advantage of going straight into editing as we already had actual footage that we'd use in our film. I began off editing with Shannon waking out of bed and used match cuts to make some actions seem continuous and it worked really well, it took a few tries because at first the scene seemed to jump but as I progressed further I managed to make the cut seem really subtle. Then after editing one scene I showed my group, who seemed really please and gave me a few ideas on where I could change. After changing what I needed to I edited Kris waking up and walking to college and again used match cuts. Editing was really easy and fun because I had a lot of clips to choose from; all varied in shot types and angles. Furthermore, as I began editing Shannon's journey to college I suggested to my group that we had the opening credits on top of the walk to college because having them two just walk would seem a bit boring. They agreed with my idea and I saved our work so far onto the video drive. Hopefully, we finish editing our rough cut by this Thursday and get feedback on how we could improve it.

Filming Day 3

We were supposed to film a couple of days ago, unfortunately I was ill and wasn't in college but the filming still went on because it only included Shannon and Kris and they did a good job at filming and acting. The location was Kris's house and the scenes were of Kris and Shannon waking up doing makeup, getting ready etc and leaving to go to college. They used different bedrooms to make it seem as if they were using different houses because travelling to Shannons's house would be time consuming. During filming they used a variety of shots and angles, but whilst watching the footage we realised that we missed out a scene of the girls going to sleep the night before waking up, this was one of our main ideas but looking at our footage we decided that it wouldn't be relevant for the movie, and it would just take up a lot of time.

If we were to film again we would choose less busy times for example, weekends because the roads and canal near our college are mostly busy on weekdays. Also, before going to film we would print our story board or make a list of what needs to be filmed and that way we won't forget to shoot any scenes. We would also try not to be sick! Now, next lesson we plan to edit and hopefully we can have our rough cut up by next Thursday.

Filming Day 2

Day 2 of filming was better than day 1 because we managed our time efficiently and we didn't have to stop a lot for members of public as we were filming on quiet roads which was really helpful. We managed to film the rest of Kris's journey and also all of Shannon's journey and this means all we have left to film is the scenes inside Kris's house. Luckily the weather today was the same the first filming day and this means we can edit without having to worry about the weather changing every second. We filmed alot of different shots and angles which means we will have alot choice when we edit. We also remembered all the rules especially the no head space one but we found it hard to stick to that when the character walks further away from camera. Using the fig rig was really easy and beneficial as we got have more variety and movement to our shots, which again will give us a wide range of choice to edit with. Here are a few pictures fromt today's filming session:

Filming Day 1

Camera Tutorial (Group)

Camera Tutorial: Group 27

On the 10th of February, we had our camera tutorial which was very informative as Mickey the technician gave us lots of useful tips about how to film. He told us what we should do and not do and also what we should look out for while filming. Even though as a group we have filmed before it was essential in learning new tips but also refreshing our memories about ones we learnt a few months ago. The number 1 tip was 'There should be no head space- ever'! This seemed like a common mistake many students make and makes the footage look really amateurish. We watched examples of videos after every tip which was useful as we could see what was happening.

Pitch Feedback

What happens next?

What happens next?

In tomorrows lesson (Monday, 10th February 2014) we plan to write our film opening script and develop any other ideas we think are relevant to the movie.

We want to explore more sound and video effects which we can use in Final Cut Pro to edit our opening sequence.

Pitch: Individual Feedback

Pitch: Feedback

When we presented our pitch as a group, we thought that it was really good and we presented it as best as we could.
We mentioned everything that the pitch required, so I hope that it gets us top marks.

We had a 15 minutes to present the Pitch however, it took us 27 minutes to present everything, which is almost double the original time.
We thought that it was better that we presented everything even though it may take some time because, we wanted to share all of our ideas concerning the film opening.

In our opening sequence we originally had, an argument and a fight happen at the end of the school day which involves a lot of blood and gore and creepy props however, we were told that it would take longer than 2 minutes to film and it will more than likely confuse the audience so we decided to change everything up but still keep our original idea.

In order to fit in everything we planned to do in the first place, we decided to make some 2 in 1 scenes, which is basically two events thrown and mixed together in one.

We think that it was really good feedback even though we had a very clear idea of what we wanted to do, this new idea that we're currently developing is even better and hopefully get us top marks.
We had an overall, great feedback and a generally nice response to our opening sequence idea.
