Film Opening: 4 Tracks (?)
Film Opening: 4 Tracks (we might use).
1. Bif Naked & Metallica- Nothing To Lose
We might use this track because, it is a very emotional and slow track which can be used during sad scenes or a slow motion shot. This song can suggest a change in the atmosphere which can be used for a lot of Teen Drama's and Sci Fi.
2. Game of Thrones (Metal Remix)
I really like this track because, I think that it can be used for our Teen Movie opening because, we will have the conventional characters of the emo kid, the princess etc. I think this would suit really well just like in the movie '10 things I hate about you' because, it will give us a clear indication in the contrast between characters and where they come from.
This track is very special because, to a lot of people this sort of (not so heavy metal) music might be portrayed as rebellion and an instant label in the 'outcast' category. This is the perfect song for any classic Teen Movie opening sequence.
3. Three Days Grace- I Hate Everything About You (0.1 edit)
I think this track will go perfectly with our opening sequence because, during the beginning of the song you have a few instrumental pieces here and there which can work great with the opening credits and transitions. I think this will be the perfect track which we can use to fade in and fade out in between scenes as it is so easy to work with.
This track is really nice to listen to and I think that it would suit any Teen Drama or Teen Film because, it would be perfect for the opening and/or closing credits.
4. Ella
The song Ella is an indie folk genre with soft tones and emotional message. I think this would be a great scene opening as the background music to a very sad Teen drama.
I have decided to go for challenging and soft music tones because, I feel like this teen movie should be a very meaningful and very though out one. This song does my idea and creativity justice because, it reminds of you home and it captivates you when you listen to it.
I love this song and I think it would be a perfect choice for our Teen Opening sequence.
Submarine Comparison
We were given a clip in which the sound had been cut off. This was a task in which we had to watch the clip and decide for ourselves what soundtrack worked best with it. The clip we watched was the opening sequence of a film called Submarine (2010).
After watching the clip, we came to the conclusion that an acoustic guitar kind of sound best suited it, therefore we went onto creative commons which connected us to soundcloud so that we could find the perfect soundtrack for the opening sequence.
We used FinalCutPro to edit the sound into the clip so that it looked proffessional and fitted perfectly. However, we did initially have some problems as the sound track that we found was unavaible to download, but nonetheless we found another track that we later found to be much better.
Also, our sound on our computer in the editing suite cut out completley. Kris & I began to think we were have a bad day, and it was just our luck that another thing would go wrong. The clock was ticking before the end of the lesson so we were more keen that ever to get the task done. The technician sorted everything out.
We eventually got to hear the original for the opening sequence of Submarine. To our suprise it wasn't actually music, it was more or less sound effects to match the scenery of the countryside. (As seen in the clip.)
When listening and watching the original we immediatley came to the conclusion that our version was better, not only because we did it ourselves but because we believe that the track hit every note and beat and just the right moments in the opening sequence.
Overall, the task was a successful one as even though there were many faults we were able to complete it by finding a good soundtrack, editing it into the opening sequence and adding it to our blog.

Submarine: Comparison
Submarine: Comparison
We were given a soundless clip of the 'Submarine (2010)' opening sequence.
Our task was to watch the clip and find sound that relates to what we see on the screen.
We used the website creative commons to find a copyright free sound and add it on to our sequence.
The title of the song we chose was 'A Sound' and it was by an unknown artist on sound cloud.
Looking at the original sequence and our own we find a lot of similarities in terms of the tone and the flow of the whole clip. I think the original clip is good however, we think that our Sound 1 clip is even better because, we found the perfect track for the sequence that went well with the transitions and the characters' expressions as well as scenery and shots.
However, the second sound was not as good because, it didn't go well with the shots but the tones were also very nice and calming.
Overall, I think this task was a success because, it showed us that we have some sort of an indication when it comes to choosing sound and that can help us with our film opening which we will be planning and filming in the future.

The Breakfast Club Remake: Editing
Editing our remake of 'The Breakfast Club' was a part of this project that I really enjoyed, because I was familiar with Final Cut Pro, having used it in film studies last year. However, we did encounter some problems which slowed us down.
Firstly, I moved everything from the memory cards into the folder 'footage' or 'bloopers' depending on how good the clips were. Then I moved the files from 'footage' onto Final Cut Pro and began placing them on the timeline in the correct order. Next, I used the razor blade tool to cut the clips and for some shots I used a freeze frame to lengthen the shot. The tricky bit was when I had to edit the clips to make them look like match cuts and the timing had to be perfect to allow the transition to look smooth. With a few trial and errors, the outcome was pretty good. After that, I placed The Breakfast Club original soundtrack from YOUTUBE onto the time line and lowered the volume of the song after the credits finished. Then, I put in the voiceover of me and fine tuned the editing to match the speed of my voice, this was also abit tricky as some shots were too short and some too long to match my voiceover, however I overcame this by adding freeze frames where the shots were short and cutting the shot where it was too long. Finally, I added the credits and tried to keep the font, colour of background and text similar to that of the original opening titles.
I think we could definitely improve some parts of our video, for example some bits sound like the music is cutting off and only my voice can be heard, if I was to edit again I'd lower my voice and increase the music by a tad and perhaps have more fade outs and fade ins. Overall, the editing part of this project was very enjoyable and enabled me to learn more skills.

The Breakfast Club Remake: Filming
The Breakfast Club Remake: Filming
Filming the remake of The Breakfast Club was difficult because, unlike the movie we didn't have a similar set and locations to use so we had to improvise.
In the movie we see the characters arrive in cars, and being filmed inside the car however, since we are teenagers and we cannot drive we had to use toy cars as a replacement. Also, we chose not to recreate the inside of a car, instead we used our classroom and shot it in open space.
We used props such as trophies, baseball jackets and glasses to help character identification. As a group we didn't face many problems whilst filming because, we were very organised and managed our time well.
However, since there were 3 of us and 5 characters including the parents we had to play 2 or more characters each.
I was The Criminal, The Basketcase & The Brain's Sibling.
Shannon was The Princess, The Brain's Mother & The Athlete's Mother.
Tarun was The Athlete, The Princess' Father & The Brain.
Overall, it was really fun to shoot a remake of The Breakfast Club as it is one of my favourite movies and I think we did a good job with the costumes and the acting.

Order Of Titles
The conventional order of titles varies from movie to movie and depends on the status of the director, stars, producers, etc. The director is usually last to be shown in the opening title sequence because he/she is believed to be the most important in film production. To give us an idea of the order, we observed the title sequence in these movies:
The Roommate
The History Boys
Juno

Reflection
Reflecting on group blog
Looking at our blog and it's development we feel that in order to progress and improve our presentation we need to set ourselves targets which should be achieved by the end of the year.
Our main targets are to:
- Use variety of technologies to post our research
- Improve blog layout
- Add gifs, images and videos to our posts
- Develop our use of terminology
By doing this our blog will be better and hopefully help to pull our grades up and also, it will be beneficial for those who read our posts. The easy layout and use of technology can also be helpful to easily navigate through the website and hopefully give us some feedback on any improvement or suggestions.

Review: Carrie
Carrie
Carrie is about a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious
mother, who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being
pushed too far at her senior prom.
The movie was directed by Kimberly Peirce and stars, Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Gabriella Wilde, Ansel Elgort. The protagonist Carrie, is played by Chloë Grace Moretz who is well-known for her role as 'Hitgirl', in the teen, superhero comedy, 'Kick-Ass' and 'Kick-Ass 2'.
I chose this movie to review as a teen movie simply because of the themes portrayed within it, for example, even though it is a horror/thriller, there are common stereotypical high school themes for example, romance, rebellion, bullying, conflicts, alienation, etc.
The movie has a typical high school plot where the outcast girl, Carrie, is bullied and seen as a weirdo....however the catch is that she inherits telekinetic powers from her grandmother. This does not drive the movie away from a typical teen film because the good looking jock, Tommy, played by Ansel Elgort, rescues Carrie by asking her out for their senior prom. Tommy is a typical jock, he is the captain of the football team, everyone seems to know him as he walks down the corridor and all the girls want to be with him. Carrie also has a stereotyped role where she is bullied by other girls and everyone avoids her becuase they think she isn't normal. Some other characters are the mean girls who see themselves as better than everyone else and particularly Chris, who quits P.E and humilates Carrie by uploading an embarrasing video of her onto YouTube.
There is alot of conflict between Carrie and her mother, because Carrie is a girl being bought up in the 21st century whereas her mother is very old fashioned and superstitious. This is effective in bringing teens to watch this movie because many teenagers and young adults can relate to having arguements with their parents about staying out late, going parties, etc. Even though this mother is psychotic there is still evidence she fears for her daughter's safety as she warns her not to go the prom because her fellow students will laugh and mock her.

This film is mainly set in a high school because Carrie is a teenager and she worries more about looking good for her prom than her mother who she locked in a cupboard. This shows how desperate she is to fit in with the others and make herself stand out in a good way. Furthermore, this movie is a remake of the original Carrie released in 1976, directed by Brian De Palma and based on the novel by Stephen King.
For me, this movie is really exciting and fun to watch, and i think it will definately meet its target audience of teenagers and young adults, because of the high school daram but also the strong dose of horror. Also adults and older generations will be attracted because the novel Carrie was released many years ago along with the previous movie.

Binary Oppositions.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
(video: http://teenfilmteaching.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/storylines-and-plot.html)
What is a binary opposition?
(video: http://teenfilmteaching.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/storylines-and-plot.html)
What is a binary opposition?
In terms of media, binary opposition is a contrast or an opposite between characters.
- Sister vs Brother.
- Parents vs Children.
- Popularity vs Outsider.
- Girls vs Boys.
- Good Kid vs Bad Kid.
- Young vs Older.
There are many more but these are some popular ones.
What did we do?
Kris, Tarun and I watched a brief clip from 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off.'
Whilst watching it, we took note on the different binary oppositions, the setting, the themes, the editing, camera and sound.
The clip showed the opening of the film. We chose 3 main binary oppositions that were evident in the clip.
- Parents vs Children.
- Brothers vs Sisters.
- Good Kid vs Bad kid.
The oppositions.
Brothers vs Sisters.
The camera work was mostly eye level for these two characters, however when faced with gaining the attention from their parents Ferris gained more camera time because he was the center of attention. Also, the camera did a close up on the sister when she entered Ferris' room to emphasize her body language which highlighted her relationship with Ferris. A lot of match cuts were made which enabled the audience to see the many facial expressions and movements made to show the interaction and tension between the two characters.
Parents vs Children.
Low angle shots were used when showing the parents looking down on Ferris to cradle him and high angle shots were used to show the attention Ferris was pining for giving him this 'puppy dog eyes' look. Ferris continuously mimicked the voice of his mother to appear cute, this allowed him to look as if he needed the affection from his parents in order to get what he wanted. (A day of school.) The relationship between parents and children in this movie highlight that of most. Children tend to try and manipulate their parents protection of them into getting off school and parents never want to believe that their children would be so malicious and vindictive to do such a thing.

Good Kid vs Bad Kid.
The good kid bad kid relationship is purely bad on how much influence does the bad kid put on the other and does the good kid fall to peer pressure. It most cases yes, they do. However, only in our clip we see it takes a lot more persuading to get them to crumble. This is mostly highlighted through mise en scene. Ferris' relax's in the garden with a drink and some sandals whilst his friend is tucked up in bed genuinely trying to recover. This highlights how one character doesn't want to be bad and really wants to get better, and the other wants to go out and 'live a little.'
Review: She's All That.
A high school jock makes a bet that he can turn an unattractive girl into the school's prom queen, through the process of this he gradually falls in love with her. It was directed by Robert Iscove and written by R. Lee Fleming Jr. Like most teen movies at has the typical characters, locations and story line that make it an all round teen movie.
She's All That was filmed in 1999 with all the cliches a teen movie can offer. This movie has strong elements of romance between Zack Siler, the jock and Laney Briggs, the unpopular girl. It also has rivalry and drama between Laney Briggs and Taylor Vaughan, the popular girl. Throughout the movie there is continuous comedy, therefore making this film a cliche teen movie.

This movies featured actors such as Freddie Prinze Jr, known for his smaller rolls and for being in I know what you did last summer. Also features Paul Walker which would encourage younger fans to watch the movie after the success of the Fast and Furious fame. In addition, this film featured people from the music industry such as Lil Kim and Usher who were at the peak of their fame in the 90's. This would've boosted the audience which means it boosted the ratings.
This movie was set in a high school, therefore I found it lacked originality. However, it did include other locations that are not usually seen in a teen movie such as the theatre. Other locations it featured throughout the film were parties, the beach, the home, fast food restaurant and many more.
This movie is versatile in the sense that many different audiences can watch it. Older generations may watch the film to reminisce whereas younger generations many watch the film in slight belief that their teen life is the same or to look at what it could be. Those considered socially awkward are more likely to watch it and relate to Laney Briggs. Girls tend to watch films like this hoping for a romantic fairy tale like Laney and Zack.
The only problem I truly had with this film was the lack of originality. I knew what was gonna happen and when it was gonna happen. Also, Rachel Lee Cook who played Laney Briggs was a child model, her costume was only a pair of dungarees covered in paint and a pair glasses therefore making it clear to the audience that their would be some form of a transformation.
This is not based on the everyday lives of teen therefore the director was more free to exaggerate and exploit the characters, otherwise the film would've been quite boring.

Binary Opposition
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Binary Opposition
Binary opposition refers to a pair of concepts that have opposite theoretical meanings.
Storyline
A high school wise guy is determined to have a day off from school, despite of what principal thinks of that.
(video: http://teenfilmteaching.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/storylines-and-plot.html)
The binary oppositions set up in the film intro are:
Brother vs Sister
Parents vs Children
Rebel vs The Good Kid
The first binary opposition I have chosen is between the brother and the sister. The miss en scene shows their body language and how they act towards each other. Whilst Ferris is supposedly 'sick' his sister picks up on his act and makes sure to pull faces at him whenever their parents aren't looking. Another binary opposition in terms of mise en scene is between the rebel and the good kid. At the end of the intro we see that Ferris (rebel) calls up his best friends (good kid) to hang out before his parents arrive home. Since, Ferris is 'sick' we see him chilling outside in the warm sun having a good time whilst the other kid, is genuinely sick and is trying to get better.
In terms of editing, we see that Ferris (protagonist) has more screen time than anyone else because, the audience may be interested in what he does when he's been lying to the principal and his parents.
In the beginning of the intro when Ferris' parents leave the house and he goes up to open the curtains the editing music is very upbeat. This shows that he's happy and excited that he got away with a lie.
We are able to identify a binary opposition between the rebel and the good kid by using cross cut editing. This shows both perspectives of the characters and what it would be like to switch roles.
The sound (dialogue) helps us to identify the binary opposition between the parents and ferris. The parents tend to talk to Ferris in a baby voice once they found out he's "sick". In the intro we see that Ferris in fact replies back with a similar tone and gesture as his parents in order for them to buy into his performance.
The camera angles help us identify a binary opposition between the parents and the children. A low angle shot was used for Ferris' perspective of his parents baby-ing him.
